First it was Toyota with the Mirai, then it was Honda with the NSX and other companies such as the likes of Hyundai have also joined the market. This vehicle segment we are talking about of course, is the hydrogen, alternative fuel cell vehicles range. We knew it was only a matter of time before it happened but today we can confirm that BMW have thrown their hat into the mix and have confirmed they are developing a new model in the same segment which they say will go on sale by the year 2020. It wasn't confirmed but as far as the name tag goes for the car, the chances are that it will be included in the companies I range which currently consists of the i8 and i3. The German designers confirmed the news that they are working in development with Toyota to create the new FCV and who better to learn from than the Japanese company who have already launched the Mirai in Japan and will do in Europe from this September. Good news from BMW which sees the number of companies adopting the new technology continuing to climb.
Italian car designers Fiat this week confirmed that they will show off their next in line of Fiat 500 models on the fourth of next month. This news comes just one week after a Cabrio and standard hatch version of the cars were spotted on the road being put to the test. We already know of some of the new changes made to the car thanks to some leaked information which was revealed online a number of weeks ago. These changes include new LED headlights, rear light cluster designs and the alloy wheel are also going to be growing in size. The leaked information did not reveal the engine range to come along with the updated 500 model though but we would expect that this would stay the same as the model on the road right now but carrying some updates potentially making both models more eco friendly when it comes to C02 emissions. Keep a look out next month when Fiat debut the all new car.
Running costs, it is something that car manufacturers all around the world are striving to achieve in low form and Mercedes Benz may now have just the ticket when it comes to keeping running costs down on future AMG models. The head of compact car development for Mercedes AMG Steffan Jastrow stated that electric turbo charging for downsized engines is something that the company are heavily considering for their future range. He stated further that electro turbo charging can help to add the performance of vehicles and be better for the economy all at the same time. No vehicles have ever used this technology before but Mercedes have been beaten to the punch by the Audi A8 going on sale in 2016 which will be the first car ever to use electric turbo charging. No time scale has been issued as to when the new technique will be used on AMG vehicles or which cars will receive it first but we could still be a number of years away from the technology being used in Mercedes models which could include the likes of the B Class and S Class line up.
