BMW & Mini Announce Pre 2005 Diesel Scrappage Scheme
Is this the signal of the demise of diesel engined models?
BMW and Mini have now announced that drivers of mature diesel engined models have the ability to swap in their cars for up to £1,700 off a brand new model in an attempt to lower global emissions and stop the decline in new car sales.
The luxury car giant have named the scheme as the 'fleet renewal campaign' and is aimed at below par vehicles that only meet the Euro 4 emission standards or not even that. The scheme applies to the vast majority of BMW & Mini models built before the turn of the year into 2005.
The £1,700 contribution can be added to standard discounts and contributions given by the dealer. However, there is one catch.
The new vehicle purchased has to meet the Euro 6 emission standards of 130g/km or lower. One major advantage of the new scheme is that it can be applied to electrically powered vehicles such as the BMW i3 or i8 models.
Therefore, as well as having the government grant of £5,000 towards the purchase of an electrical vehicle, you now have the potential to add a further £1,700, meaning a whopping discount of £6,700 in total as an incentive to go electric.
Diesel engined models have been criticised in public for a number of reasons recently, resulting in uncertainty amongst millions of drivers throughout Europe. It is now thought that diesel engines are not the most efficient engine available.
However, BMW insist that their diesel engines are just as efficient as a petrol engine, if not more so due to the level of development and technology assisting them.
