Background
The 7th generation of the BMW 3 Series is due in our showrooms on 9th March 2019. Coinciding with the new 19 plate cars on UK roads, the new 3 Series, known as the G20, is set to peak the interest of car buyers.
The new 3 Series premiered at the Paris Motor Show in 2018. BMW say the new model has been designed with ‘clean, precise lines’ and to ‘emphasise superior driving dynamics’.
The 3 Series dates back over 40 years to 1975, from which time more than 15 million units have been sold.
Designed with a driver in mind
The new BMW 3 Series sees major changes to vehicle dimensions when compared to it’s predecessor. The G20 is 85mm longer (at 4,709mm), 16mm wider (at 1,827mm) but only fractionally taller by 1mm (now 1,442mm). The model also sees a bigger wheelbase (2,851mm) and track widths.
The new 3 Series is also around 55kg lighter than it’s previous incarnation. This saving is made, in part, by the use of aluminium side panels and bonnet.
The new model will provide a choice of two non-metallic and ten metallic colours. This choice will include the new metallic Portimao Blue which is only available on the M Sport model.
BMW is synonymous would an interior layout with the driver in mind. The new 3 Series does not disappoint.
Features include a newly designed instrument cluster, a start/stop button in the centre console and a newly designed selector lever.
One thing that has not changed is the fantastic iDrive system, a firm favorite with BMW drivers.
BMW say that customer feedback revealed that the old model was 'too cluttered' in the cabin. The new model is said to be 'smoother and calmer'. Improvements in the quality of the leather have also been made. The buttons and controls have also been grouped for simplicity.
Performance
The launch range of the G20 will see two power units employed initially. These will be the four cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The Diesel variant will allow for a choice of either an all new six-speed manual or the eight-speed Steptronic gearbox. The all wheel drive ‘xDrive’ version will also be available on the 320d at launch.
